TONI LOOKSOUT FOR 9ICE .....

Words: Adedosu 'kenzy' Adekunle

In a rather dramatic twist, cosmetologist and emerging artiste manager, Toni Payne, might have moved back into the expansive Abule-Egba, Lagos, home of estranged husband – afro hip hop singer, 9ice. Her unexpected return to the house she left in unwieldy circumstances late 2009 came as a shock to neighbours, aides, close friends and relatives of the singer who thought she had moved on for good.

According to several impeccable sources, Payne’s startling about-face happened last Thursday when she came to the house demanding to see the father of her child but was prevented from entering.

“She called 9ice several times but he didn’t pick the call because he had been told she was at the gate. He came with a male friend even. What angered 9ice was that she didn’t pre-inform him of her visit, source says.

She left without blowing a fuse, only to return the following day. This time, Payne brought along with her the only product of the short-lived marriage, Zion, and she was allowed in without much ado. Payne was in the house until Wednesday morning. The source further says, “Throughout the time she spent in the house, she was always cooking, trying to worm her way back into 9ice’s heart but he didn’t eat the food because he’s trying to be careful.”

To underscore her return, she even invited the Soundcity crew over to the house to interview her artiste, Adol, which, multiple sources say, didn’t go down well with some of 9ice’s crew members. In all of these, 9ice has reportedly kept mum and remained indifferent to Payne’s schemes.

During her brief stay, it was learnt that 9ice’s parents also made surprise visits to him, lending credence to the insinuations that Payne might have begun the reconciliation process from the roots. Close watchers of the unfolding scenario are not totally surprised at her sudden transformation, far from her hitherto bellicose stance on anything 9ice, especially since she learnt that an Abuja-based lady now has a child by him.

In the last one week, discerning followers and Payne’s fans, especially on social networking and micro-blogging site, twitter, would have deduced that she is whirling in a new kind of euphoria and that she still has a thing for the celebrated singer, even to the point of helping to hype his forthcoming double album.

“The most anticipated album of 2011. In fact, over anticipated sef = Bashorun Gaa,” she tweets. That was last Thursday, the day she made the first visit to 9ice’s house. Another of her tweet reads, “More than love is true friendship. This alone can withstand all the ups and downs and still keep us standing. Three years….God is great.” She adds, “Two steps backwards, 20 steps forward.”

Some curious followers pointedly told her to leave 9ice alone, thinking she was up to some mischief. She had to reply one of them that she is just an avid fan of his music. Since then, every of her tweet has been punctuated with lyrics and anecdotes from the singer’s songs. Then, when 9ice made a guest appearance on a radio programme on Wednesday morning, Payne was the first to let the world know; “Oya o, (it’s) good music time. Tune in to Rhythm 93.7 FM, 9ice in the building.” She posted several tweets, indicating that she was keenly following the programme. When E-Punch spoke with her shortly after the programme, she refused to comment, saying, “I’d rather keep my private life private.”

When contacted, 9ice’s manager, Dehinde Fajana, says he is not aware of the entire affair and, therefore, could not comment. He chips in however, “9ice is an intelligent young man who knows what he wants out of life. For now, all our attention is concentrated on releasing his jazz album which would serve as a precursor for the double album. That is all I have to say.”

9ice was a burgeoning musician when he met the then US-based Toni Payne at an event in Lagos. They got married in July 2008 and had a baby shortly after. They agreed to separate in January 2010, confirming speculations that the marriage was not built on solid foundations. The third anniversary of their wedding would have been Monday, July 18.

TOGETHER?????? 9ICE AND TONI PAYNE.........

Words:Adedosu 'kenzy' Adekunle

On July 17, 2011, Toni Payne-Akande sent out a subliminal wedding anniversary shout out to her estranged hubby 9ice on Twitter. The message could not have been for 9ice who has been off the micro blogging site for sometime; but, for the discerning ones among Toni’s nearly 15,000 followers. ‘July 17, 2011…‘ she first wrote through her handle. Then she adds ‘More important than love is true friendship. This alone can withstand all the ups and downs and still keep us standing. 3 yrs… God is GREAT!‘.

For those who don’t know, 9ice exchanged wedding vows with Toni on July 17, 2008 at the Surulere registry in Lagos. It was a hush hush wedding, planned in a hurry, and with only very few guests in attendance. The bride was already heavily pregnant. The groom’s parents we conspicuously absent at the registry. The media celebrated their union; many were fascinated by their love story. To the casual eyes, the marriage seemed made in heaven. But those who spent time with the pair feared the marriage was a union of convenience and it was only a matter of time before the centre would fall.

And things did fall apart in 2010 when the couple announced their separation. By January 8 when they issued the statement, they had already been living apart for months; and 9ice was already allegedly dating again. It’s difficult to say exactly what caused the collapse of this union we all so admired. Because, the stories vary, depending on who you are and who you’re listening to. Toni’s loyalists claim he beat her up and kicked her out, after she confronted him about affairs he was allegedly having. 9ice’s buddies insist Toni was troublesome and violent and totally impossible. They also allege, that 9ice decided to take a walk, after he realized his wife and his friend Ruggedman had actually dated prior to him meeting Toni through Ruggedman (Toni and Ruggedman continue to deny this and no one has come out with any evidence to prove them wrong).

The controversies that followed their separation are well documented; the relationships it destroyed remain in memory.

And now, there’s a whole new angle, as those close to the couple would want us to believe; as Toni’s Tweets suggest, and as our investigations reveal.

The pair is, as a matter of fact, considering reconciliation, trying for the umpteenth time, to see if they can save their marriage. The wedding anniversary tweet from Toni is one of many she’s written in recent times, suggesting she’s found some love for 9ice again. She freely mentions him in her tweets, and promotes his appearances. On July 20 she wrote ‘Tune in to Rhythm 93.7, 9ice in the building‘.

And away from social media, we’re told they’ve met a couple of times, and, apart from their son Zion, one other key issue they’re speaking about is the possibility of ‘shaming intruders’ and getting back together as husband and wife. We’re unable to confirm for now, who’s initiating the talks, or whether they’ve actually reached an agreement.

‘It’s complicated‘, one of 9ice’s closest friends tells us. ‘You know 9ice has his twins in Abuja, he’s really keen to move on; but also, I think he may be confused because you really don’t know what tomorrow holds. Yes he and Toni have been seeing, but I can’t say for sure whether she’s moving back in or if 9ice is even considering that.‘

Another source tells us ‘They’re no longer fighting. Even when all the twins’ drama was on, Toni was determined not to let anything let her go wild again. She’s fond of 9ice, and in spite of what has happened, she’s talking to him about their future together. 9ice, whose star has dimmed in recent times, currently spends time between Lagos and Abuja, plotting a big comeback and working to get a university degree. Toni, who lived in the US for years, has remained in Nigeria; living in Surulere with family. And she’s doing even better, business wise, than when she was with 9ice. She’s worked with W4, Adol, Olamide and Zara to give us some of the most impressive songs of 2010/2011.

DUNCAN MAIGTHY : TAKING OVER FROM TIMAYA.

Words: Adedosu 'kenzy' Adekunle

Once upon a time he was an unsure, upcoming producer-singer; holding tight to a day job, and auditioning for talent hunt shows. He watched as many friends got record deals, travelled to Lagos and overseas; he watched as they made it big; buying flashy cars and building houses.

Now all that has changed. Thanks to back-to-back hits the fans have favoured, thanks to album sales and performance engagements, Duncan, the one-time up comer is now a bona fide star.

Investigations by journalists across the country show that Duncan Mighty currently sits on top of the A league; with a bestselling album and truck load of hits. The only other act who comes close is Wizkid who’s also in high demand right now.

Most importantly, in Port Harcourt, where he’s domiciled, Mighty is, apparently, a big deal. Residents who spoke with us admit he has everyone eating from his palms; and is currently rated ‘far higher than Timaya’ according to our findings.

‘Of course Duncan Mighty is the rave right now. He’s taken over from Timaya‘ a label executive told us.

Timaya was the ‘King of the South South‘ for years; launching out into prominence with the Odi-centric materials that drew national attention to the unfortunate Odi massacre. But over the years, his image has been battered by multiple controversies portraying him as an exuberant celebrity at best. Wars with the media left him scarred, and his last album performed below par.

It’s not surprising he’s lost that throne to Duncan, who, many say, is a more disciplined musician, gifted producer and far more popular with fans and the local media.

‘People like Duncan and Waconzy are the future‘ a fan tells us. Timaya has been very lucky and blessed, but he will have to work extra hard to reclaim the number one spot.

Residents tell us Timaya is in fact, ‘no longer considered a PH act’, since he’s moved to Lagos; but that ‘he’s still very much loved’.

Port Harcourt is home to many gifted acts, most of them well established in the Niger Delta region, with huge followership, before eventually breaking into the South East and South-West. Popular names include M-trill, De Indispensables, Korkormikor, Frank D’Nero, Tha Ibz, Mr 2Kay, Lyrical, Specimen A and Chyme HD.
