Now, 48 hours after Don Jazzy confirmed the Mo’Hits split through carefully-worded Twitter updates, one of his loyalists Sidney Esiri a.k.a. Dr SID has spoken for the first time on the situation, expectedly taking sides with Don Jazzy.

‘DonJazzy is d most important piece of Mo hits, who doesnt get the credit he deserves, without his creativity a lot of things will not exist’.

MOHIT'S CREW GOES SEPRATE WAYS...AS DBANJ AND DON JAZZY WALKS AWAY..THE UNTOLD STORY.

Words:Adedosu 'kenzy' Adekunle

It all started as a rumour...but it seems its turning out to be true...A source close to both parties has revealed that the relationship between the two is now so fractured that Don Jazzy has since moved out of the mansion they once shared in Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.

Don Jazzy, according to the source, has become so frustrated with D’banj’s lifestyle, tantrums and unmanageable ego that he refuses to work with him. D’Banj, for his part, feels Don Jazzy is spending more time honing the careers of the Mo Hits fledglings such as D’Prince and Dr. Sid. He has also accused Don Jazzy of delaying his album release by giving “excuse after excuse.”

“D’Banj has an album due this year,” the source said. “He wants Don Jazzy to spend all his time working on his own album. Can you believe that Don Jazzy spent only two days working on Wande’s new singles?”

The source added that D’banj has also made several disparaging remarks about some of the Mo’Hits crew who he calls “backup singers.” He has also made several less than complimentary comments about Don Jazzy who he accused of going around in “pyjamas and t-shirts.”

Bad blood, GOOD Music

Although tensions have simmered between the once inseperable maestros for about two years, things went quickly downhill last year following the deal signed with G.O.O.D music, Kanye West’s record label. An investigation revealed that the terms of the agreement are far more in favour of the producer, Don Jazzy, a realization which has irked the artist. The source confirmed the disparity in the deal’s structure and revealed that D’Banj’s involvement is peripheral which has led to major problems between the two. The deal also involves a financial commitment of up to $3M, which Mo’Hits has not yet fully made up.

“When we all celebrated the deal last year, little did we know that it was really Don Jazzy that was being signed up,” the source said. “While Don Jazzy has already produced a track for G.O.O.D Music, D’Banj is just waiting around idly.”

Cracks in the duo’s relationship became apparent last year when both of them arrived and sat separately to several awards ceremonies. In the past, the two had always shown a very unified stance in public.

Politically poles apart

D’Banj, real name Dapo Oyebanjo, has come under fire from fans in recent months following his perceived nonchalance to the fuel subsidy and Occupy Nigeria protests. In a recent interview, the artist dismissed the criticism, saying that he was busy shooting a new video at the time the protests broke out.

Don Jazzy, on the other hand, quickly identified with the masses by stating his displeasure with the Goodluck Jonathan administration on his Twitter page.

The news of the impending separation will come as a major shock to millions of devoted fans who have come to identify the one with the other. Any hopes of reaching reconciliation have been dashed according to the source who said that the pair can no longer work together.

“Things are so bad now that there are many shows that D’Banj does where he does not remit any money to Mo’Hits,” the source said. “He accuses Don Jazzy of being too laid back and not attending meetings and negotiations but still feels entitled to collect fifty percent.”

The source added that Sunday Are, who used to represent the duo, now only works exclusively for Don Jazzy after D’Banj turned his back on him.

“The only people he is really close with now are Ikechukwu and Bankuli,” the source said.

It remains to be seen what the long term implications are for the Mo’Hits record label but D’Banj has wasted no time in launching his own record label which he plans to release his album on.

TONY PAYNE.....TWEET ABOUT "9ICE LIVE IN CONCERT"

Apparently, Toni Payne doesn't hold any ill will toward her baby father, 9ice. I can understand her wanting to move on with her life and not wanting to malign 9ice. She wants us to believe she's just a fan of 9ice's music and nothing more.

Despite hints of a possible reunion in Toni Payne's tweets, 9ice still insists he has moved on to someone else. In Toni's heart or playlist, there's still a place for 9ice.

Toni Payne now expresses how much support she still has for him. She's been excited about 9ice's album launch party holding in March.

HIPHOP ACT "ICE PRINCE ZAMANI" JOINS THE LEAGUES OF CELEBRITES FATHERHOOD.

Words:Adedosu 'kenzy' Adekunle

This might be a media stunt...but with proves and so coming in...it seems its for real. There’s a new daddy on the block: Popular rapper Panshak Zamani, better known as Ice Prince, is now a father.

We can authoritatively confirm that the ‘Choc Boy’ is now daddy to a baby boy with 20-year-old Bimbo Babatunde.

The young lady in question, is a former student of the Houdegbe North American University in Benin Republic, reportedly gave birth on Thursday, March 1, 2012. The baby’s name, according to Bimbo is ‘Toluwalase’ (meaning God’s word is final).

Sources confirmed that Bimbo, who lives in Egbeda, Lagos, was an off campus resident while studying at HNA University, before dropping out due to academic challenges. Several of her friends who spoke with journalist say she was extremely social, and adventurous.

‘She was quite popular and fun loving. She was one of those young ‘smallies’ that were friends with those rich Hausa kids, and they did a lot of drinking, partying and smoking’, said a friend who asked to remain anonymous.

Investigations show that Bimbo first enrolled into the school to study International Relations, but after scoring low grades, she had to transfer to the Languages Department. However, she didn’t graduate from that department, leaving the school in 2011.

‘She left the University in 2011, amid scandal’, one source says. ‘She had weed smoking issues and of course, stealing. She stole my friend’s 20k sometime ago’, an anonymous source who knows Bimbo quite well alleges.

With this history of controversy, it’s no surprise her baby daddy Ice Prince is not exactly pleased with the present situation. Bimbo’s friends say the rapper is ‘very unhappy with her’ and has refused to be financially or emotionally committed, even after she put to bed last week.

‘Her mother took her to Abeokuta to give birth because the family is upset with her. Her mom said she doesn’t want to see her and the baby. And even though Ice Prince went to see her when she gave birth, he was shouting at her. She wept, but he was not even moved…’

Another friend says: ‘We all had to contribute money for her to prepare for delivery and take care of the child. He didn’t give her any money. Not even a dime. I think he’s mean’.

We tried for days to speak with Ice Prince, but he was not forthcoming. Those close to him say it’s a difficult situation for the rapper. Why? Prior to dating Ice Prince, Bimbo allegedly had an affair with Ice Prince’s label mate and fellow Jos Town artiste Jesse Jagz. ‘It’s so funny, she wasn’t even his real girlfriend. She cheated on Jesse with him, and dude wasn’t smart enough to use protection’, one of Bimbo’s close friends told us.

As we found out, it’s not likely that Ice Prince is ‘feeling the boy’. The rapper didn’t act the part of a proud papa, denying the news when we placed a call to him on Friday, March 2nd, 2012. He spoke to our journalist shortly before a performance in Yola, Adamawa State

After trying to book an interview with him for days, we placed a call to his phone. However, due to difficulties in communicating, Ice Prince then asked us to try text messaging. When we sent him a text concerning the news, he called back and said;

‘You are asking me questions, you are just a normal reporter and I don’t know why you are asking these questions. I’m not going to answer any questions, I don’t know anything’.

His manager, popularly known as ‘Nanle’, also refused to confirm the news. ‘Please, Ice Prince is preparing for a concert right now, when we get back on Sunday’, he responded.

Meanwhile, a friend of the rapper said ‘Telling him (Ice Prince) that you are aware of his new born baby might be disturbing to him’.

Bimbo, however, doesn’t seem to have any issues with sharing the news about her baby boy, posting his picture as her avatar via microblogging site Twitter. She tweeted ‘I’m sooo gr8ful to God…my son is d cutest thng on earth..momma luvs u to death Toluwalase…’, through her account @Bimbabybabs

Nd he’s got his dads lips…sooo cute!’, she excitedly continued.

Dozens of her friends are congratulating her on twitter and elsewhere, sending goodwill messages and praying for the bundle of joy. But we’re told that as she prepares to christen the baby (on Thursday March 8), she’s worried not just about her future as a single mother, but about caring for the baby. ‘She needs help’ her friends say unanimously.

Ice Prince burst onto the music scene off the heels of rappers M.I and Jesse Jagz, who were signed to Chocolate City in 2008. He was subsequently signed to the same label, where the three acts were collectively called the ‘Choc Boyz’.

He didn’t gain much attention until he released the monster hit ‘Oleku’ featuring another label mate BrymO, and with his follow up hit ‘Superstar’, the rapper’s popularity rose. Just last year, he released his debut album ‘Everybody Loves IcePrince’, to lukewarm reviews, and has recently been touring African countries, and the UK.

The rapper lost his mother in May 2011, while his father, (who was a member of the Nigerian Police Force) is said to have died in 1999.

"MY DAD IS THE BEST"....SAYS HIPHOP ACT "DAVIDO"

Words:Adedosu 'kenzy' Adekunle

These days, no party or club night is complete without the latest hit song from this 19-year-old. David Adedeji Adeleke, better known as Davido, is a bit of a wunderkind, having been in the music game for six years already. He stopped by Nigerian Entertainment Today’s offices to talk about his background, why he doesn’t see Wizkid as his competition, and why he didn’t ‘Occupy Nigeria. We catch up with this dude and this is what he has to say.....ENJOY!!!

Who was David before Davido?

Before I did music, I was into music, being around the industry, always in the studio. It was something I always wanted to do. But now that I’m in the operations, it comes naturally to me; when I go for shows, I don’t really think about the money. I’m going there to entertain, to make people dance and make them happy. It’s a good feeling that when people see you, they get happy. I’m happy as well that I’m doing what I love.

Where were you born?

Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A

You grew up there?

No. I was born there and moved back to Nigeria when I was like two years old. When I was about 16, I went back to the U.S for like a year, then later came back to write the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) exam.

Which part of Lagos did you grow up?

I grew up in Lagos, Ikeja, GRA, then moved to the Island in 2005.

How many are you in your family?

Five and I am the last. I have two sisters, two brothers.

When did you start music production?

I started producing when I was 13. I began from being a studio rat to recording songs; that was at Enough Records Studio at Ikota shopping complex, then moved to other places.

How long have you been producing music officially?

It’s going to be a year in March.

Which instruments do you play?

I used to play the saxophone but now I’m on the keyboard.

How interested are your parents in your music career?

I’m the first person in my family, my generation that has gone into music. My mom passed away; my dad kept saying I needed to go back to school. But really, it was when ‘Dami duro‘ dropped that he knew I was serious with music. With ‘Back When’, I was doing shows upon shows; he thought it was serious but not really. I performed ‘ Dami duro ‘ at my sister’s show in December, which he attended, the crowd was massive. I sang to him and everything.

Before ‘Back when‘ which other songs had you released?

I did a recording with one of my cousins, MP. We were both pushing it then, but it didn’t work out. ‘Back when‘ was the first song I released, I dropped it when I was in London.

What made you come back to Nigeria?

Some of my friends advised me to come back, that they were making money and that the music industry in Nigeria is easier to penetrate. I had fun over there, I had money but there was no passion. I was determined to start something, no matter my age.

How did you hook up with your manager Asa Asika?

We’ve been friends before high school, I told him my plans. He was just helping me at first then I later hooked up with him, then he became my manager and we pushed things.

People are comparing you to Wizkid, how do you see this comparison, and do you see him as a competitor?

I’m actually with him most of the time. We sometimes talk about it, laugh about it; we go on Twitter and look at blogs. I don’t know why people weigh us together. I don’t believe in turn by turn; Why can’t Wizkid have a number one song in Abuja and I have another one in Port Harcourt or somewhere else and everyone carries it together; no competition as such. I see him as a colleague, maybe if I didn’t know him personally; but I do. We are even planning some things together, so cool.

How do you feel about the buzz surrounding you?

It’s fast and crazy. When I came out, apart from Wizkid’s album that was out then, which was hot, there wasn’t really much music releases. So I was like let me use that advantage. I know that I had good music so I went back to the studio, worked in some stuff, came out with ‘Back When’, and shot the video. I had support even from Wizkid, Naeto C, D’banj and some others.

What inspires you to make music?

The streets. People look at me like this guy’s dad is rich and stuff. Even the ‘Dami duro‘ song, I got the inspiration from one of my guys on the streets. They usually call me ‘Omo baba olowo’. Most of my songs all have Yoruba in it, I want to confuse them. People look at me like I don’t have to do what I’m doing but it’s not about whose money but your money; it’s about my dream; it’s about doing my own thing.

Which artistes have inspired you over the years?

The likes of Mo’Hits, Wizkid, D’banj, Wande Coal and Flavour. Hopefully, we are going to do some crazy work this year; 2012, no play.

A lot of people like your song; how are you reacting to the reception?

It’s been crazy. I can’t do a lot of things I used to do anymore. I can’t even go to Shoprite; it’s like a gift and a curse at the same time. When I got into the game at first, I was like I just want to be there, I don’t want to blow but when everything bloomed, I was like, wow, I thank God. My first major break was at the Music Meets Runway show and from there I built on it. Before, when I went for shows, I’d wonder if people would like the song, but now it’s normal.

Your stage presence is quite different from other fast rising artists. How did you develop it?

Even before ‘Back when‘, all the shows I’ve had I’ve been always the same way, even if people don’t know the song, an entertainer should be able to go somewhere and rock it. There’s a difference between being an artiste and an entertainer. D’banj , Psquare, Wizkid and the likes are entertainers that’s why they are up there. I love people who make good music in Nigeria, and shoot good videos but I feel like this whole thing is in-built. I’m sure with all this things I have, if I don’t have this confidence, I won’t be where I am today. It’s not always all about the song; some people have big songs, but don’t do shows.

Could you say having money has helped make your career bigger?

I don’t believe that; if I go on that route, they will suck me out because they will think that there’s a lot. There are many people I approached at my beginning stages; I introduced myself to them and all but… now they are like, ‘you are my boy’. In the industry, I’m not looking at anybody; I’m going on my own. If you don’t like me, you don’t; anyone that does well, I give them their credit.

Girls, Girls, Girls…tell us about them?

No major girl for now. I’m just having fun. If I do meet a girl, now will be the time to log on/off. I’ve not really seen anyone for now; I’m on my hustle, on my drive.

What about school?

I’m studying Business Administration, 300 Level in Babcock University.

How are you managing school and music?

It’s crazy.

How do your lecturers treat you?

They bug me a lot. Sometimes, they intentionally try to test me like, ‘oh, I’m going to pick on this dude today’. I laugh with them and sometimes I’m like those are my fans. To me, it doesn’t matter. I just have to do what I have to do.

Do you think if you weren’t the one producing your music, you would still make hits?

Being my own producer helps a lot because I can produce exactly what I want. Even if I’m not the producer, I can tell a producer exactly what I want but I will take it to my studio, rearrange the whole thing and make some changes.

Do you miss your mum?

Yeah, I do. I was young though but I’m sure if she was here, she will be rocking all the songs.

What’s your relationship with your dad?

It’s very good. I go over to see him from time to time.

What’s one word that describes Davido?

Different; if I’m in a room with stars that are bigger than I am, I will stand out. I don’t care, I could jump in the crowd, my facial expressions are different, and my shows are different.

When can we expect a full album?

For now, I’m not really working on an album but on songs and hits. I’m sure this year, not particular about the date, but there will be something. My fans are going to get tired of me, trust me. I have plans; I’m working on some international stuff. We also have about three marketers already

"I WILL BE GETTING MARRIED SOON" SAYS "BANKY W"

Words:Adedosu 'kenzy' Adekunle

He needs no other introduction....Mr Bankole Wellington, better known to many as Banky W, needs little introduction to music followers not just in the country, but in Africa as a whole. However, besides music, the R&B star is passionately concerned about the challenges that plague the Nigerian youth and is never one to shy away from speaking out on their behalf when he can. In this revealing interview with NET, the RnB singer talks about his activism, music projects, future plans and whether there will be a ‘Mrs W’ anytime soon.

How did you get involved with MTV’s ‘Shuga’ drama series?

When we heard what the drama series was all about, once you talk about helping young people or trying to make Nigeria or Africa a better place, anything along those lines, we will always be willing to throw our weight behind it. So when they gave us a call and explained what it was all about, we were very excited and honoured and privileged to be involved. In the series, Wizkid and I make very small cameos playing ourselves.

Other than that, the production of the theme song was handled by EME, which is our record label, and the song was produced by Masterkraft and I. It features Wizkid, L-Tido and Boni-face, a Kenyan artist from the group P Unit, and me on the vocals. The song is a theme song for the show but it kind of sets up what to expect from the show and the message, you know the fun and entertaining side but also that we are trying to educate people, so that’s really the length and breadth of our involvement. There is going to be a musical video handled by MTV and shot by Clarence Peters in Kenya, we will also be attending the series premiere.

How did you get involved in activism and would you consider yourself an activist?*

I don’t necessarily consider myself an activist as much as I consider myself just a concerned citizen. Anything that makes my country a better place, anything concerning speaking up for young people and standing up against injustice I’m passionate about. I was involved in ‘Light up Nigeria’, ‘Enough is Enough’, ‘Mushin Makeover’, you name it, I’ve been involved because it is important to me as a person. For me because I have a platform for music and I have the spotlight on me, if I can use that platform to play my part and make the country a better place, I’d always want to do that.

Is it a strategy for popularity?

Not so much. When I feel strongly about something, I feel the need to speak up about it. Everybody that knows me or grew up around me knows the kind of person I am. When I was in secondary school, I was in the debate team, I was always someone who was very vocal about what I believed in and always quick to write or speak or do something to play my part in righting a wrong, and that’s always who I have been. It didn’t just start recently, especially with the *Rueben Abati* situation, but that was just one of the high profile ones.

Would you ever consider venturing into politics?

At the moment, no, but I will say that some of us should be thinking along those lines because it’s easy to point accusing fingers and criticize the people in government. You know, if they are doing a terrible job, then people like you and I should be like ‘you know what, I want to make a difference and I can do better than what these people are doing’ and just get involved. So you never say never, but if I find someone who I think can do it, I will encourage them.

Bearing in mind that pop music was, and still is, predominantly the main genre in the industry, how were you able to stick with and make a success of doing R&B in Nigeria?

I think as a musician, it’s very important to know who you are, and the kind of music that you love to do and that you do best. Because I think that on my best day, I can never be D’banj, I can never be P-Square. Conversely, on their best days, they can never be Banky W, so I think that is important. Even before I came to Nigeria, a lot of people were like ‘oh R&B can never work in Nigeria, by a Nigerian or for a Nigerian audience’, when people want to listen to R&B they go listen to some foreign artiste, so if you come in you have to do like this or like that otherwise it’s not going to work. But the truth of the matter is if I had tried to be someone else, it wouldn’t have worked and we wouldn’t be sitting here. So my best bet was to just be who I am and do that to the best of my ability and just hope that somebody, somewhere will appreciate what I’m doing and connect with it.

How true are the rumours that EME is currently scouting for a female act?

Well it’s called EME, that is Empire Mates Entertainment, and the reason we, that is me and my partner named it that ten years ago was that we had always wanted to build an empire that had multiple artistes. It was never the idea to build EME around myself, I mean it’s not much of an empire if it revolves around one person, is it? So the minute we got successful enough to branch out and get other talents and getting in to other areas we started to do that, and as God will have it, we have been able to register a measure of success. The idea, of course, is to grow and be successful, and to help more artistes achieve their dream. So the idea is that while I am successful, Wizkid should be successful and then Skales should be successful and when we find a female artiste, she should be successful and when we get into TV, or movies or fashion, clubs, anything at all, it should be successful.

You were reported to have said you wouldn’t be releasing any album till the situation in the country improves. Why?

I just think there are some things that are bigger than music. At a time this year with everything we were facing as a country it was more important to focus on that than pushing out albums. So I took my foot off the accelerator (musically, that is) and got involved in the occupy Nigeria project, just to try and play my part in making this a better country. But the album is definitely coming out, in fact right now we are working on an EME album which will feature Wizkid, Skales, myself and a couple of other talents that we are currently in the studio with. So by the grace of God that album will come first, around March and then mine should follow shortly thereafter in April or May. We will also be re-releasing Wizkid the international album and we will be with him in the US and the UK. We’re also going to pick up a couple of acts along the way.

The umbrella body for performing musicians in the country, PMAN, doesn’t seem to get much support or participation from a lot of contemporary music artistes. What, in your opinion, is responsible?

There is a serious disconnect between PMAN and the actual musicians who are performing, like night and day. We’re like oil and water, and we have tried on several occasions to bridge that gap, but it didn’t quite work. In something like that you need people who will essentially sacrifice their own time in making it work. So yes there are discussions in that direction, but they are not moving as fast as we want. However, I do foresee that kind of a body actually being formed and being functional, I hope and see that happening soon.

So, with love in the air, Valentine’s Day being around the corner, is there someone Banky W may be leading to the altar soon?

At the moment, it would be nice, but there is no one in the picture now in terms of marriage. It is definitely something I’m looking forward to and hopefully when the time comes I hope to be a very tremendous, successful husband and father. As of now, I’m kind of just business-minded and trying to improve my personal life so that when the right lady comes around, I’m good to go, but for now, I’m single.

So you’re not seeing someone?

I’m single.

What would you like to be remembered as, a musician, a businessman, an activist?

Well because all of these things that I am involved in makes me who I am, I would hope that after all this is said and done, I’d be remembered as someone who made a tremendous difference in everything that he was allowed to touch and I was able to make people’s lives better and I was able to make the world a better place.
